The Turkish foreign minister Abdullah Gul has warned of a looming anti-west backlash among his country's citizens due to EU hesitation over Ankara's membership in the European club as well as the US' approach in the Middle East.

In an interview with the Financial Times, published on Thursday (20 July), Mr Gul said negative sentiment towards Europe and the US has started spreading among "moderate liberal people" who previously backed Ankara's pro-western orientation.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Gul commented on the terrorist group PKK, saying that Turkey would use all of its rights under international law to protect the nation's security. Gul stressed that Turkey didn't want to exercise its power blindly, but did want to cooperate with its neighbors against the terrorist PKK.

It looks like the Turks want to break through in Northern Iraq, as the Turkish-Iraqi borders are a major entrance of Kurds which cause them problems. This rumor was warm months ago. Also, the possible establishment of a Kurdish state in the area by the Americans would benefit them, but this would be negative for the Turks.

What I want to say is that the Kurdish issue is the main reason for the emerging Turkish-American crisis.
