I've read the other post on this and I do have "Typing replaces selection" checked in the options.
This does not happen all the time, but more than half the time. I am running Word 2003 on XP. When I hit the backspace key it does not backspace. Sometimes it will backspace a few spaces and then stop. To erase characters, I have to use the delete key. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Does it work in other applications? Such as when typing a reply on this forum?
Yes. It works everywhere and often in Word, but about half the time, only in Word, it doesn't work.
