Oh. Well, Bob. I'm certain New Haven wasn't referring to you. Smile --just the people who used to be:

Ah, Boston, the land of the bean and the cod.
Where the Cabot's speak only to Lodges,
and the Lodges speak only to God.. Very Happy

My partner, bless her heart, was a big part of why my life has been so successful. When I was in pursuit of her, there were three doctors and a engineer trying to win her heart. I didn't even have a college degree, and she picked me! Wonders never cease. c.i.

growing up in germany in the 30's and 40's(that is 19xx) i was always fascinated by foreign lands. my parents had a good friend who supplied me with plenty of books about life in other coumtries - there was robinson crusoe, old shatterhand, leatherstockings, african explorers, count luckner(a german PIRATE or buccaneer) during world-war- one; all of these writers must have had some influence. however, i was always a fairly timid boy - poor at sports. still something must have lingered, because in the 1950's i decided that i should seek my FORTUNES(!) outside germany. at that time quite a few germans went to south-africa. of course i had no idea what life was like in s.a. - and luckily i did not go there. when i met a rather nice young woman(who three years later would become mrs. hbg ), i found out that she also was quite interested in trying out some other part of the world to make something of our lives. so we got married in may of 1956 and in early july 1956 we boarded a small dutch freighter(prins willem III of the oranje line) and went on a honeymoon-cruise to canada. so here we are 47 years later ! - and if someone asks us why we came to canada we can truthfully say "oh, we are just here on our honeymoon!". hbg

heeheeheeheeheeheeheeheehee . . .

Them Hamburgers, they're just a couple of ill-concealed lovebirds . . .

Most here know i'm not in the least religious, but as i don't believe in throwing that long-suffering progeny down the drain with the grey water, i'm still able to see when there's an interesting bit of folklore or common wisdom in a religious text . . .

If you raise a child up in the way he should go, when he is a man, he will . . . etc. (emphasis added)

The older i get the more i find myself like my grandparents, who raised me . . .

well, ehBeth. It is quite obvious where your talents and song of the open road comes from. Smile

Hamburger, Mrs. Hamburger. Salute. Bet you both know Schumann's...."Traumerei". I remember it with such fondness. In the midst of change, we find those constants that encompass all that is dear and holy.

Very Happy Smile Laughing

C.I. As W.C. Fields once remarked:

Anyone who hates dogs and children, couldn't be all bad, but then there is this anecdote attributed to him:

A friend came to visit him when he was ill and found him reading the Bible. Stunned, the friend asked him:" But, Bill, I always thought that you were an atheist"
to which W.C. was reputed to have replied:

" Just lookin for loopholes." Smile

Well, my friends. I guess we're all looking for loopholes. Goodnight
