If making the recovery set for my new machine will take 19 CDs, how many DVDs will it take?
(Sounds like high school algebra, no?)
CD = 650 megs (approx)
DVD = 4000 megs (approx)
19 CDs = 12,350 megs
12350 / 4000 = 3 and a bit.
Budget for 4 DVDs.

Thanks, Heliotrope. That tells me just what I needed to know. I was thoroughly confused, because HP Knowledge base says 10 CDs or 2 DVDs. HP online tech support says 12 to 19CDs, and HP Recovery Creator says 19 CDs., not even mentioning DVDs.
I have to get it right the first time, because this HP feature will only work once.
A backup feature shouldn't only work once.
What if you want to backup again at a later date ?
What exactly are you trying to do ?

Actually, there are two quite separate things I'm aiming at.
The first is making recovery disks, and that's an HP bit of software; it states that only one set of recovery disks can be made.
The backup is a different program, and obviously that's pretty flexible; it's also not top priority, at least at the moment.
Ahhh gotcha.
Aye the recovery disks will only do it once.
You should make sure your machine is in a condition that you're happy with and utterly clear of viruses/spyware/trojans etc... before making the recovery disk set.
The, if your PC gets trashed by a virus or a drive failure you can get a new drive or reformat the old one and restore your PC to the state it was in when the recovery disks were made.
That's important.
If you have software that you installed after the disks were created or email/pictures/files/savegames anything... then it will all get zapped when you do the full recovery.
Backing up can be done periodically to save all the files that are new and/or have changed. So that's cool.
