Many people mistrust genetically modified food. I think that their fears are not necessarily warranted. If care is taken and thorough testing is done, i think that genetically modified food can be safely used. Very often, though, a solution to the food shortage in developing countries would be to use more efficient farming methods. Also, many developing countries grow crops for export (such as bananas, coffee, sugar), rather than growing the food which is needed to feed the population of that country. This can lead to other problems, though. In Nicaragua in the 1920s and -30s, Sandino told people to stop growing bananas and pineapples, and to grow fodd that they needed to eat. That threatened the profits of American companies doing business there. The United States sent Marines to Nicaragua to hunt down Sandino and his followers, and it was more than 50 years before the Nicaraguans were finally free of the government which was set up then.

In many, or even most cases, countries could feed their people just by switching from cash crops for export to food crops. To do so, they might need to offend international capitalists who are out to make a profit.
