Last night I watched the last twenty minutes of the American Film Institute's (AFI's) "100 Years ... 100 Cheers," which was something about the most inspirational American movies. And the AFI list actually did inspire me, but not in the way that it probably intended. Rather, I was inspired to think that maybe it's time for the AFI to STOP MAKING ALL THESE GODAWFUL LISTS! Really, AFI, this thing has gotten completely out of control. Here's
a list of the AFI lists:
AFI's 100 YEARS...100 CHEERS (2006)
AFI's GREATEST MOVIE MUSICALS (2006)
AFI's 100 YEARS OF FILM SCORES (2005)
AFI's 100 YEARS...100 MOVIE QUOTES (2005)
AFI's 100 YEARS...100 SONGS (2004)
AFI's 100 YEARS...100 HEROES & VILLAINS (2003)
AFI's 100 YEARS...100 PASSIONS (2002)
AFI's 100 YEARS...100 THRILLS (2001)
AFI's 100 YEARS...100 LAUGHS (2000)
AFI's 100 YEARS...100 STARS (1999)
AFI's 100 YEARS...100 MOVIES (1998)
I suppose, however, that the AFI has figured out that it has a successful, albeit increasingly picayune and irrelevant, formula on its hands (sorta' like Dan Brown), so it's unlikely to stop with the lists. With that in mind, I suggest that we propose the next AFI list, and (to help the voters) you should include the top ten movies for that list. For instance:
AFI's 100 YEARS...100 MONKEYS
1. King Kong (1933)
2. King Kong (2005)
3. Mighty Joe Young (1949)
4. Gorillas in the Mist (1988)
5. Bedtime for Bonzo ((1951)
6. Tarzan the Ape Man (1932)
7. The Jungle Book (1967)
8. Every Which Way but Loose (1978)
9. Monkey Business (1931)
10. King Kong (1976)
Any others?
