Several people advised me to download ZoneAlarm as a firewall, and so I did. ONE BIG QUESTION? and the question is a question. Do you want to allow DownloadWare to access the Internet?
Zone Alerm asks you if you want certain programs on your computer to connect to the internet.
DownloadWare is a download accelerator that has ad serving technology bundled into it. In my opinion you should not only disable it's access to the internet but uninstall it because there are plenty of download accelerators that do not bundle adware into their installs.

BTW, ZoneAlarm will ask you those questions quite a bit in the beginning, feel free to ask about the programs it is trying to restrict. It can be confusing.

Thanks, Craven. Usually, if I don't understand something, I just say "No!"
hmmmm. Borrowed that from Nancy Reagan.
But you do think I should keep ZoneAlarm, right?

Without any info no I don't.
But your internet connection (dial up or broadband) OS (is it Windows XP?) etc can change my mind.

That is precisely the mix that, to me (there are differences of opinion) suggests the least possible motive for using Zone Alarm.
XP has a built in firewall and because you are on dialup you don't really need a firewall anyway.
What I would do is scrap zone alarm and turn on XP.
Many other techies would tell you not to worry about firewalls at all. Just keep your anti virus program up to date.
