Does anyone know of any good websites for booking travel from the US to Europe? I ultimately want to reach Austria, but I'm willing to land just about anywhere and take the train to Austria if it's cheaper. I also think it would be more fun.

This site helped me- a collection of several links.

http://www.independenttraveler.com/resources/article.cfm?AID=631&category=42&page=2

Airports- check Budapest,Munich, Frankfurt, Bratislava.
Bratislava offers transportation to Vienna for 10€, takes about an hour by bus.

or even smaller ones in Austria.
Like Salzburg,Graz or Linz- you might be able to find a charter.
Good luck.

Oy Swimpy, airfare prices have gone up considerably in the past few months, but Austrian Air has some special deals, if you could fly from
NYC.

Where would you fly from (Des Moines is a bit out of reach Wink )
and when?

Oh goodie. Thanks for replying Osso, ul and CJ. I have to run now, but I'll be back in a few hours to check out all of your links.

CJ, I'm flexible on all aspects of this trip, including if I go at all this year.

I would try to look for a fligh to/from London at e.g. Virgin Express and then use from London to Vienna Air Berlin/NIKI.

It might be a good idea to book "months" advance and use 'regular' airlines: I'd booked my flights about half a year in advance and paid as little as $ 850* for a round flight Paderborn (no parking fees, just 15 mins from my home), Munich, Chicago, Denver, Albuquerque, Denver, Frankfurt - with Lufthansa and United (* including all and everything, from taxes to service charges etc etc).

Fantastic links, folks, especially Ul's. Actually Graz is closest to where I'm headed. I found a Continental Airlines flight from Chicago to Cologne for $380 US one-way. Not bad. Now I need to check Walter's Air Berlin link to see if I can get there fom Cologne. I could check the trains too.

Cj, Austrian Air had a great price from NYC to Vienna but I would need to travel before June 12. I don't think I can get away that soon, darn it.

Link for Railway connections.

I really suggest, you look at expedis or opodo (www.expedia.com - ww. opodo.com) when you want more distant dtaes - usually they've collected already most "super deals".

I only suggest AirBerlin, because it has some service included (opposite to "low budget airlines").

Graz airport is only served by Ryan Air from London/ Stansted (as a budget airline), otherwise Lufthansa and Austrian.

Check the train fare- it might be less expensive to
go by Ryan Air.

Train fare will be about 150€ and takes 11 hours to
13 hours- depending on the train.

Or even less- depending when you will travel.

Just look and book early-

No Swwimpy, they advertise that you need to travel from April 1 - October 31, 2006. You probably need to book by June 12 in order to take advantage of the low fare. Look....

It seems there is a price difference if you start from London or from Graz. I checked the German site and found a flight ( all included, roundtrip) for
58€.

The English site of Ryan has blackout dates which I didn't see on the Austrian site.

Blackout Period: 14th Jul '06 - 31st Aug '06
Notes on this fare: All Holidays, School Breaks and major sporting events are excluded from this offer

Train about 4 to 6 hours- depending on the train.
Fare one way-about 45€.

Train Vienna - Graz about 2 1/2 hours
Fare one way about 30 €
Car about 3 hours.
