Doubt you can easilly find a rig capable of handling today's advanced games for that amount of money - mebbe a used one, just mebbe, and then it'll prolly choke on some of the newer games. To be at the front of the pack today takes a 3Gig+ processor, at least a Gig of highspeed memory(2 is better), a minimum of a 128MB hardware video solution (a pair of 256MB cards is the preferred solution) multichannel sound (Dolby Digital/DTS, 5.1 at a minimum, 7.1 is state-of-the-art, and supported by some newer games), USB2.0, at least a high-speed DVD read-capable optical drive (2 would be better), and at least one fairly large high performance hard drive (again, 2 would be better). Right there, at just the minimums, you've blown your budget, and there's still stuff like a motherboard, power supply, fans, a case, keyboard, mouse, an operating system, and some sorta game controler - pad, joystick, or wheel, along with speakers and monitor to consider. Add a 0 to that 600 and you're in the neighborhood of a contemporary "top flight" gaming system.

If cutting edge performance isn't absolutely necessary, then you can get closer to what you wanna spend - you pretty much get what you pay for.

That is a reasonable question - but entirely possible, I suppose; I once dropped a window-mount air conditioner down a flight of stairs - did no good at all either to the appliance or the stairwell - upshot was replace the AC and patch and paint a buncha drywall. It was quite the show, though - damned near worth the expense and hassle. I guess all ya gotta do is be the right kinda clumsy at the right time Mr. Green
