ummm....sorry dutchy.....it's not columbo..
keep up, will ya?
Dean Kamen, inventor of the segway...
Bravo!
However, must say it's a shame that most people identify him as only the inventor of that silly thing.
In your picture Francis, he is shown in a wheelchair he invented that has literally exploded the wall of inaccessibilty to those who need to get around in wheel chairs. It works with an internal gyroscope, so a person can "rear up" on it's back two wheels letting the user be eye level with other standing people.
I saw a young woman on TV, who was testing one for him, do that, and suddenly she was staring straight into the eyes of her mother. They started crying and so did I. I realized what a powerful thing it was to not have people looking down at you all the time.
This wheelchair also goes up and down stairs, travels over rocky ground, over sand, etc. All while remaining perfectly balanced.
In addition, Mr. Kamen is the inventor of the heart stent, used during angioplastys to keep the arteries leading to the heart from closing up.
He also invented a portable dialysis machine, thus liberating people from having to be close enough to a dialysis machine in a clinic if they are choosing to go into an isolated area.
Also invented the first portable insulin pump.
And a water purification system that generates power as a bi-product.
Wouldn't THAT be something for third world countries.
I truely wish he would concentrate his efforts more in this arena.
Agree with your comments on Dean...
THis man would annex everything:
German or French Statesman Francis?
No, Dutchy.
Hints : This man was very, very wealthy. A country was named after him. (but it's no more named that way).
I've stayed in his hometown when I attended my first London gathering
I'd say Yitwail has to be right (I didn't check) but yep, Rhodesia was named after him - until 1980 and it became Zimbabwe...
Here's one. This guy is an inventor who's name can still be seen in high places and people never tire of it...
Yitwail and Hingehead are correct I feel. This is what I located, which confirms Francis and Walter's hints:
Cecil John Rhodes (July 5, 1853 - March 26, 1902[1]) was an English businessman, mining magnate, politician and the colonizer of the state of Rhodesia, which was named after him. Rhodesia (later Northern and Southern Rhodesia) eventually became Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Rhodes profited greatly by exploiting Southern Africa's natural resources, proceeds of which founded the Rhodes Scholarship upon his death. Rhodes is famous for having declared: "all of these stars... these vast worlds that remain out of reach. If I could, I would annex other planets" [2].
When he died in 1902, Rhodes was considered one of the wealthiest men in the world.
Charles Goodyear. Although the Goodyear Tire and Rubber company bears his name, he had no connection with the company, which was founded after his death.
Chai got it right, do you want a turn?
Who's in the Mickey Suit?
Just kidding, who's the guy with Mickey?
oooo the games on again?
don't know myself, maybe someone else recognizes.
I'd need a hint.
Clue: Disney World was promoting the re-opening of space mountain, so they got this guy to help promote.
