Most canoe races have a separate category for racing canoes
and "recreational" canoes. Racing canoes are long and narrow and made
of kevlar. They are actually translucent. The paddles used with them are
generally graphite with a bend at the end of the shaft where it meets the
blade. A good team can really move in one of these babies.
My partner and I race in the "recreational" category. The boat has to
have a certain length to wdith ratio at the waterline to qualify as
recreational. Larry's boat just makes it. It's a Wenonah Spirit, fiberglas
reinforced with kevlar. Lovely boat.
We've won our share of races in it.
Ive got a book on building a kevlar canoe. Too much solvent involved You can now get all sorts of dyed kevlar fabrics so they dont have to look like a bugs wings.
