Where in the Bible does it state she was ever a prostitute? Yet clerics and laypeople have been spreading that misnomer for centuries.

It doesn't.

Lightwizard,

The Bible does not say that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute.

Luke 8:2 ~ And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,

The question was rhetorical bait (like anyone shouldn't know I already know that). The second sentence should have been a clue even for the clueless. Yet it had appeared in sermons, books, movies, et al for as long as I can remember. This is the mis-interpretation of the Bible by Christians and is not isolated just to Mary Magdelaine that is a gross misdirection. It's not just from taking the Bible literally or not, it actually goes along with all the editing, excising and plain distortion that has plagued the work over the ages. So is supposing that Jesus was married a mis-direction? No, because there is so much unaccounted for about his life, especially in actual historical accounts which really only state that a Jewish leader was crucified. Well, duh, many Jews were crucified during those times and it even became a twisted distortion of the Bible that Hitler decided it was a noble course of action. I'm not sure he had to twist it anymore than than it's being twisted today to deny marriage to gays, nor especially in our history, to allow slavery.

Lightwizard,

Well, at least two Christians knew that Mary Magdalene was not called a prostitute in the Bible.

I'm sure you will demure as well as the other Christian to not answer the question, "When did you discover this?" When will you discover how much of the Bible is mis-directed, rhetorical (not even good metaphor or allegory) and irrational voodoo?

And it isn't just Christians who make that mistake.

I seriously doubt that anyone apart from christians give a rat's ass over the question, or have ever heard of Mary Magdalene.

Lightwizard,

I was never taught that Mary Magdalene was referred to as a prostitute in the Bible. As a matter of fact, it was a Sunday School class that said it was a common mistake that she was referred to that way.

And I am assuming the rest of your post is strictly your opinion?

A Christians viewpoint on this subject.

Dan Brown's the Da Vinci Code is not only biblically flawed, it is also a work of blasphemy.

Dan Brown's book was never meant to be Biblically accurate so this part of the last sentance is nonsense. The blasphemy part is subjective. I don't believe any fiction on Christ is blasphmy because the orthodox version of Christ is most probably fiction as well.

I guess I was just being kind of flippant to the above post. Sorry.

Xingu,

Thanx for the article, but I have to agree, the Da Vinci Code is a blasphemous book. It goes against the Bible and that makes it blasphemous in the eyes of God and believers.

You seem to willing to answer these questions, MA, so I'll run this one past you. Even though the book is clearly a work of fiction, you still consider it blasphemous? Simply (or not so simply) because it goes against the Bible?

Tin Sword,

Anytime anything is talked of about God that is not true is blasphemous, whether it is fiction or not.

In other words, Tin....there is the possibility that the entire of the Bible...every last word...is blasphemous.

And if there actually is a GOD...that more than likely is the case....because every last word in the Bible would be an insult to any GOD worthy of the name.
