I am heading up to the Boundary Waters next week, any tips for fishing (walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass) or for wildlife sighting? I know that moose, wolves, and bear are indigenous to the area but in three years I have not seen one of them for better or worse. I already know how to avoid or dissuade bears although I am not so certain about wolves but would like to see them from a safe distance and am curious as to where they would most likely be whether it be to avoid them or see them. Any other stories or suggestions for the BWCA are welcome.

Some info on the BWCA.

I have had a lot of luck in previous years catching smallies, but very little with northerns and walleye. If it helps I promise not to venture over to the canajun side. (no permit) Sad

Don't know much about fishing.... or BWCA, but those pictures are nice, especially the one with the canoes. As for wildlife, they'll avoid you. Unless you're that one in a million guy with bad luck!

I was lucky enough to get this shot last year, we were fishing the shore and as I cast I hear a loud flapping sound. No more than five feet from me an eagle takes off from a tree. I follow its progress and scrambled for my camera.

Thanks Edgar.

At the lodge area there were turkey vultures circling overhead, at least that is what a local said they were.

Well I'm back and finally have some time to relax.

We started off here.

They took our canoes and gear on a johnboat and dropped us off at a portage about 20 miles in. We packed our canoes and set off for Carp Lake which was about 14 miles in with a tough portage somewhere in between.

About three hours later we set up camp and made dinner (steak and potatoes). Unfortunately not all of our meals were this good its hard to keep good food fresh when you are in the wilderness for four days.

I'm not going to give and hour by hour synapsis of the trip but I did a lot of this...

over a lot of these...

caught a couple fish...

and just enjoyed the scenery.

The BWCA is home to some of the oldest exposed rock on earth, the diagonal scratches were caused by glaciers.
