Helena Smith in Athens

The Guardian

It has taken almost 2,000 years, but those who worship the 12 gods of ancient Greece have finally triumphed. An Athens court has ordered that the adulation of Zeus, Hera, Hermes, Athena and co is to be unbanned, paving the way for a comeback of pagans on Mount Olympus.

The followers, who say they "defend the genuine traditions, religion and ethos" of the ancients by adhering to a pre-Christian polytheistic culture, are poised to take their battle to the temples of Greece.

From link:

But Greece's powerful Orthodox Church takes a less charitable view, accusing the worshippers of idolatry and "poisonous New Age practices".

That's too funny, coming from the lips of a johnny-come-lately.

Thornton Wilder suggested that each of the Greek pantheon was an archtype personifying some section of the human race.

As a Sweet Young Thing I aspired to be Athena, but now I realize I'm much more like Hera.

Gawd - did humans invent written language just so we could keep track of the buggers?

Does that mean monotheism is just another example of modern day 'dumbing down'?

'In my day we had gods that had parents and children and we had to sacrifice the right goat on the right day - you young'uns just go drink wine and eat bikkies on sundays - big deal...'

Why would you put cream on them, are they edible? Why would anyone eat something which hurts?

I'm still waiting for Quetzalcoatl to make his big comeback.
