Most influential console?

In my opinion, it is the Nintendo 64. Anyone care to voice a 2nd or 3rd or disagree?

I disagree. If anything, the most influential console is the NES.

NES is the one console that jumpstarted the videogame industry again. Before that the industry had practically crashed into oblivion. Its games featured some of the first storylines, an interactive glove of sorts and started off some of the world's most famous franchises and faces.

Sure, the NES didn't have the Rumble Pak like the N64 did, which kinda jumpstarted the rumbling console controller revolution. It didn't have the revolutionary SFX Chip that was used for the game, Star Fox.

However, the NES was one of the most influential. Without the NES, the gaming market would not look the way it does now.

however, the N64 had not only the rumble pack, but the memory card which jumpstarted saved games that you could bring with you. Furthermore, the NES was the first console which some people were skeptical about. the N64 also was the first console that could produce CGI that was on track with current supercompters. In my opinion, that shaped the gaming world more than anything else.

True, but without the NES, the gaming industry may still be in the dumps from that horrible ET episode, which is commonly attributed as the one game that brought the entire industry down to its knees.

Sony, however, has been very innovative in the games industry, but most of its innovations have really nothing to do with gameplay...

And remember the Playstation also had memory cards.

N64 came out before playstation
and what about the controllers?
the N64 revolutionized controller shape, vibraition and memory card holding. Plus it was the first to have the Z button on the back of a controller.

Or maybe it's the Playstation 2. No other console has managed to garner more gamers... except perhaps the SNES.

maybe, but the unoriginality still haunts me...
It did sell almost a million consoles though.

God, I remember that horrible pile of a game. If you're going to mention that one, you may as well also mention the "adult" games released for the Atari.

Although when you consider the amount of time it was made in that ET game was a masterpiece.

I just can't seem to remeber any part of the movie where ET fell into holes hidden by bushes and collected parts of a telephone.
Maybe it's just me.
Got a little off topic here. My vote is for the SNES. At least around by me, it was the system that introduced so many of us to video games and just how darned addicting they can be.

I had a unit that was shaped like a paddle, plugged into the back of the TV through the antenna jack and played 30-odd varities of pong, including a tank and plane game.

It was awesome. This was way before Atari and all that.

The regular NES, however, was such a huge leap forward in several areas over those systems that came before it, that I would rate it the most influential game system of all time.

Might that have been the Coleco Telestar?

shrug. I was only 3 years old at the time, so your guess is as good as mine.

SNES sold least amount of consoles compared to NES, N64 and PS2, and had one thing going for it: Ninja Turtles. True, it is addictive, but when I think back on spending time at my friend's house on video games, I remember most: Space station silicon valley, Mario Kart, super mario (absolute best seller), perfect dark (which I still choose over Halo) and smash brothers, all of which are N64 gaming classics.

Funny that. It was the SNES for me... either that or the Genesis or the Gameboy.
