Recently I tried to change my folder's icon using registry, and I manage to found it, and I change it, but I need to change it in safe mode and reboot before it takes effects. And I used iColor Folder before, is a program that change our folder's icon and colors, I checked my registry after using the program to change icon, yes, it did modify the same key in the registry as I do, but why it no required to reboot the system and can perform the operation in normal run time? As I know, lots of tweaking and stlying tools also didnt' required to reboot to take effects. Can I know how can I do so?
Windows reads the registry when it loads up and stores some of the information in memory and then usses the info stored in memory to operate instead of the registry itself. The application can change the colors on the screen without rebooting because it is overwriting the information stored in memory as well as the registry entry.
You could spend a few months trying to figure out where the info is stored in memory and how to overwrite it and manage the same thing yourself but it'd be a lot faster to just reboot.
