How Did They Do This???

I have encountered one of the most malicious posters in the world. He gave hints that I would NOW be posting from a dial-up connection in Arkansas. I have DSL in another state. HOWEVER, at times my computer behaves exactly as if it were on dial-up. Then it goes back to DSL speed.

I was an identity theft victim, and this malicious, vile person attempted to use my credit card to connect to an internet service provider in St. Kitt. The transaction did not go through on my card thanks to my bank, but is it possible this person is changing my system to a dial-up connection when he chooses to do so?

My ISP tech support has been of no help.

Thank you.

If you have not got a 56k modem attached to the phone socket, and a dial up connection with an ISP set up, you can't get a dialup connection. DSL gets slow sometimes. Especially if your pc has trojans or if your house is a long way from the central office of the phone company. Or if you have a p2p app busily uploading at maximum speed.

If you connect via a dsl "modem" then you are on dsl. Period. You should review your security, firewall, anti virus, Windows patches, etc.

You might have just answered my real question. I do connect by DSL modem, but somehow my dial-up connection with my own ISP was deleted. AHA! Does my outside telephone line being connected to a cable television line play a part in this somehow?

If this malicious poster hacked into my computer and disabled my dial-up connection, could he use such a set-up to connect my computer to another dial-up ISP?

I think that is exactly what happened.

THANK YOU.

If you have not got a 56k modem, you cannot connect that way. If you have a 56k modem connected to your computer, disconnect it now!

Do you know what a 56 modem is?

The cable TV line is irrelevant. A malicious poster could not do what you describe. It sounds like they are picking up on your relative lack of knowledge and exploiting it in order to scare you.

I know what a DSL modem is. Why should I disconnect it?

They are certainly aware of my lack of knowledge, but their scare tactics ARE NOT WORKING, even though they know exactly who I am and where I live. SOMEONE hacked into the computer system of the State of Georgia in late February, 2006. The only person who experienced identity theft was ME.

I asked you if you knew what a 56k modem was, not a dsl modem. Read my post again. Clearly, what is happening is that you know very little about your computer, and also you don't read posts properly.

Your identity has been stolen by alien robots who are out to destroy you. Then they will eat your family. They have taken over your computer. Soon it will be your TV they take over. You may have already noticed signs. It is all part of the rapture. Whatever.

PS Nice troll.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections and see if there are any entries in the Dial-up settings box you don't recognise. Delete any you don't use or don't recognise.
And check the 'Never dial a connection' box.

lumajo, you mention your machine "slows down" from time to time, and "acts like its on dialup". You say your connection is via DSL. You were asked if you knew what a 56K modem was, and you responded that you knew what a DSL modem was. You mention you're not very knowledgeable when it comes to 'puters. You mention you were the victim of identity theft. You indicate you're concerned that perhaps you're 'puter has been "taken over".

It would appear that you were being honest when you said you're not very knowlegeable about 'puters. It also would appear highly likely your 'puter is yuckware infested, quite possibly being used as a bot, doing whatever it might be that whoever has effected the highjacking of your machine wants it to do - spreading spam, serving files, participating in DOS attacks, whatever. I would recommend a diagnosis, cleanup, and hardening proceedure; there are many, a very effective, thorough one of which is available via A2K. That proccedure is detailed and time consuming, and requires particular steps to be taken in a particular order.
Executed correctly, per its simple to follow instructions, hundreds, perhaps thousands, of folks have found that it works. If you're willing to make the effort, I'll be happy to help you work your way through it. While it'll be something of a project for you, I expect that when you've successfully completed it, your 'puter will be much more responsive, your browsing will be much more enjoyable, and your 'puter will be exponentially less vulnerable to future exploits than I suspect now is the case. Your call - if you wanna pursue this, say so on this thread and I'll get you set up with what you need to start taking bck control of your machine.

Couple things to be aware of first - Your Windows must be a legitimate licensed version, and if you have any P2P software, that's gonna hafta go away. Also, taking advice from anyone over the 'net can be dangerous, for all you know right now I might be a bad guy too, so before doing anything, go ahead and browse through the Computers forum here, and make up your own mind whether or not you think I can be trusted.

As I said, if you decide you wanna go ahead, just lemme know.

joluma / lumajo. Curious that you showed up twice under different names. Anyhow, Timber knows what he is talking about and can be trusted when it comes to help with your computer.

Just don't try to discuss religion with him Laughing

There was another poster on here, for a short time, who seemed to have the same thoughts of somebody hacking their computer, stealing their phone line etc. etc. a while ago. Confused
