Wow, the 2011 breeding season is rolling in Pa. I just got a note from the DEP alert line that the nesting pair has taken up residence at the Rachel Carson building in Harrisburg. They know its last years pair cause the falcons had been banded with RFID tags and the reciever is right at the inside of the building on the 20th floor.
Kinda early? Is there any action up in NYC?

@Joe Nation,
Ours seem to be engaging in foreplay and nestbuilding. No eggs. tooo early. ALthough we are supposed to be getting into a new jet stream pattern that will be pretty much Med type climate to end out Feb. Maybe our whistlepig was right.

@farmerman,
The Rachel Carson building!? Seriously? Was it named after they started nesting on it?

@littlek,
The Rachel Carson HEadquarters building was built in 1990 and serves as the HQs for both, the Pa Dept of Natural Resources and thE Dept of Environmental Protection. It was so named via a contest when it was designed in the mid 1980's.
RAchel Carson was a ntive PAer and , despite gunga snakes protestations, she is still revered as one of the parents of the environmental movement.

We idenified the female falcon. It turns out it's Jubilee, the resident falcon that has been nesting at 55 Water Street since 2008.

Good News (posted on February 24, 2011)

Barbara Loucks of the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation has reported that a female falcon named Cynthia, banded at 55 Water Street on 5/22/02, has been nesting at the Heislerville Tower on Delaware Bay since 2009. Cynthia is the second falcon from the 55 Water Street site that has been located. Mario, who was banded on 5/18/06, has been nesting on a cliff at West Rock Ridge State Park in Woodbridge, CT since 2008.

55 Water Street Webcam Is Up & Running (posted on February 23, 2011)

Welcome everyone! The 55 Water Street Falcon Webcam is now up and running for the 2011 season. There seems to be activity with new scrapes being made within the nesting box by two resident adults whom we're attempting to identify. As soon as we can determine who they are, we'll let you know. In the meantime, keep watching.

@Joe Nation,
They dont sit on the egg for any length of time so that when all the eggs are laid, they can synchronize the htchings to be within a day or so. The falcons opnly sit on em to keep the eggs from chilling . Ive heard that the egg will remain viable (just in some kinda suspended developmet) even when the Temp is in the 40s.

@ehBeth,
The route is right along the Metro North Railroad tracks. Maybe he flew North up the East River, turned right just above 125th Street and kept on going until things started to look a little greener. :-)
