Re: Rate My DVD collection
Awright, a list!

I'm pretty bad at mainstream-Hollywood films though, havent seen lots of the obvious ones (and instead went to see lots of really obscure stuff).

But sure, why not

- Cinema Paradiso(1989)

Havent seen this one, but my sis and dad love it...

- The Colour Purple(1985)

Saw it, but too long ago ..

- Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon(2000)

Good, impressed me, made me happy, 8/10

- The Day After Tomorrow(2004)

Harmless mass entertainment, 6/10

- Fawlty Towers Collection(TV Series)

Always funny tho I dont always like the curling-your-toes humour, 7/10

- Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone(2001)

Heh, I saw this one actually ... we were going to some kids' movies then. Funny enough, 6,5/10

- The Incredibles(2004)

Pretty clever, pretty funny, but not overwhelmingly memorable, 7/10

- The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King(Extended Edition)(2003)

Which part is that? They were all pretty awesome ... part 3 was somehow the best and the worst at the same time (best because of the most amazing fighting scenes of the lot, worst because of the diarrhea of successive endings that the director couldnt choose between). Anyway, if its part 1 or 2, 8/10, if its part 3, 7,5/10 b/c of the multiple endings.

- The Matrix(1999)

Innovative, cool, set a new standard at the time, 8/10

- The Matrix Reloaded(2003)

Hyperbolic, unreal, taking itself way too seriously, and thats the one with the worst dance/party-scene in film history right? 5/10

- The Matrix Revolutions(2003)

Mindbogglingly bombastic with hyperbole reaching an unintendedly comical effect with the Christ-metaphors ... but somehow, in all its bombastic glory, kind of gripping. Good fight scenes too. 6,5/10

- Paris, Texas(1984)

Absolutely heartbreaking, gripping, brilliant, 10/10

- Spirited Away(2001)

Cute, inventive, dreamy, endearing, 8/10

- Shrek(2001)

Very funny, set a new standard, 8/10

- Shrek 2(2004)

Not quite as good as Shrek 1 (and Banderas the Cat was annoying), 7/10

- Some Like It Hot(1959)

Classics somehow seem to fall out of comparison when you have to grade them against the same measures, no? h/c.

Should all in all be an enjoyable collection, olidude, always something good to watch! Nothing surprising though, nothing particularly personal - kinda hard to get a sense of what your personal taste is. But that'll come still. And who cares if you're having fun? ;-)

Olidude some of those I love some just aren't my cup of tea, I wouldn't know how to "RATE" them, it's a matter of personal choice, as long as they give you pleasure thats all that matters.

If I may ask you a personal question, how old are you? The simple reason for me asking is that your choice is so varied. If you don't want to answer it's no problem. Enjoy the films. Very Happy

On a scale of one to ten, I would put your collection at 2.3

I would have given it a higher score, but Starsky and Hutch is in your collection and that alone knocks a few points off.

My collection and yours have the following titles in common:

Aladdin
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
The Incredibles
The Matrix
Shrek II
Young Frankenstein

I will add the following from your list someday:

Shrek
The Shawshank Redemption

The rest of the films you list I have either not seen, or was satisfied seeing once, though some of them were good. By my calculation, our taste overlaps by 15.7%

But it is after all a matter of individual taste: one person's classic is another person's stinker. I have acquired number of films that would be pretty hard to defend critically but that I nevertheless enjoy. I don't have the guts to post the entire list and face possible ridicule, however, so my hat's off to you.

Gotta agree with nimh on The Matrix--first one is fantastic, second and third produce diminishing returns. The same could possibly said about the Star Wars series. (On the other hand, the same could be said about the Alien pictures and I have, and enjoy, all four of those.)

The "epilogue" with the fate of Middle Earth signed off by the principal characters sailing off to the Grey Havens in "The Return of the King" is nearly faithful to the book in the theatrical version and even more faithful in the Extended Version. It's a quiet coda to the tale and when I read the book, it was profoundly sad that these characters were dissapearing into a historic mist. I only say historic because Tolkien manages to convince me that this world could actually have existed even though it is a fantasy.

What a diverse collection, olidue. The high points are the LOTR film, "Spirited Away," "The Pianist," "Some Like it Hot," "Young Frankenstein." "The Godfather I & II" and "Goodfellas" just skimming briefly. I would like to own "Kingdom of Heaven" as I don't believe it will be shown that often on cable and "28 Days Later," and probably buy them within the year.

You lost me on The Matrix! The most overrated movie in your collection, and you have 3 of them...

I have a few of the same movies as you, so I give you a 5 out of 10. You are missing a few titles...

"The Matrix" is a great movie for those who like sci-fi but the sequels are just reruns of the original with a coda that is so over-the-top that it even defies imagination. It's beyond sci-fi into fantasy, a trap that washes up everything that went before. It needed a better writer (it's somewhat based on A. E. Van Vogt's "Slan" series and Frank Herbert's "Dune," with the concept of a quasi-religious saviour). The tangled mumbo-jumbo script just left me cold. Special effects just don't carry a film any more and Hollywood better wake up to that fact. "The Chronicles of Riddick" is a good example and it failed at the box office. The average moviegoer is not as stupid as those executives meeting in Hollywood boardrooms believe. They have a tough job coming up in the next few years.
