Apparently, the idea that a writer should write for himself and not to please an increasingly under-read public, to you, is somehow tethered to a "female" line of thinking. Bizarre.

Of course a writer ought to write for himself but he needs to also show that his technique is a result of effort and discipline in the service of the position he is taking.Stendhal claimed he only wrote for about 100 people. They were the ones he sought to please. One can't please everybody.

I do tend to think that female writers have difficulties with objectivity.Females in general do.As do more men than is decent.

That is easy to say.Have you seen the Scorcese Dylan film? That subject comes up.Dave von Ronk tells of the jealousy when CBS signed Dylan up.Did you ever see that movie about some Hollywood madman tracking down the author of The Stones of Summer who he eventually found shovelling coal.
Dow Mossman I think his name was. That's an interesting film for young writers to watch.I recorded it off Storyville but I've lost it now due to technical difficulties.

What does sex have to do with that?

Everything.

Flaubert isn't the only author out there.

Don't I know it.I took back the recommendation when I found out Sam is only 15.I switched to Rider Haggard.I couldn't give him a comprehensive list could I?It would overwhelm him.
Who do you start them out on.Hemingway's suicide is too big a blot for me.Henry Miller is a bit much for beginners.Veblen (aaah dear Thorstein-and in a second language too) probably too difficult.Haggard is my choice for Sam's age range.
A sense of refined humour I feel is essential.

It is a bit precious I'll admit but I like it all the same. It's not a line I remember. It's funny though.
He must have been taking the piss. Was it Leon?
I think if anyone turned up at a publishers today with Salammbo they would get out the cigars and brandy out.

I read The Island of the Day Before recently. Can you explain that to me Gargle?I took notes.

What your pub like.It sounds okay.I wish some writers came in my pub.But it's inspiring all the same.Writers should find all human life interesting.
That's top of the shop.

IA Richards is good for avoiding sounding pretentious.Principles Of Literary Criticism.

Are you a Dylan nut?

Spendius, I believe I could understand Flaubert, and I am not easily overwhelmed. I wouldn't mind a list, I read fast, and comprehend well. Don't undermind my views because I am 15- I think I can handle it.

I'm into Dylan. I saw the film. Yes, even Dylan was jealous of pop artists hitting the charts with his tunes. So he went electric. I'm a Blonde on Blonde man myself. You?

Would I object if Harper Collins wanted to publish me? No.

But just because realism is in vogue right now doesn't make me want to write it.

I think Drowned should read whatever he can get his hands on, even Flaubert. I just think the process of writing should be the primary concern of a writer so young, rather than the product. Not that the results should be completely disregarded.

Might as well start with the moderns, don't you think? We all have to face them at some point. Why not get them out of the way? Joyce (Dubliner's), Greene, Conrad, etc.

The pubs here are dismal. But the beer is cheap--for better or worse.

Don't worry about me underestimating you Sam.I never underestimate anybody.

And if you really want to be a writer neither should you.

I know you won't believe this but I put a 14 month old little sweetie to sleep this afternoon just by humming deeply Over The Sea To Skye and her Mum was flabbergasted.
Naturally I didn't tell her parents that I had got her well knackered first simply by saying "taa" everytime the mite brought an item off my coffee table into the room I post on.Which is about thirty yards there and back. And there's quite a few items on my coffee table.I'm organised in that respect.

You should never try to get a kid to sleep unless it's knackered.
