Really struggling here. Trying to network two computers, host runs XP Home, client runs XP Pro, using ethernet crossover cable. Host can see client fine, but client can't find host - either 'Network path not found' or Error 53, Permissions. Both wizards are completed correctly, workgroup names are identical. I have tried 'pinging', this works fine both ways. Have even tried switching off both firewalls, makes no difference. Have confirmed exceptions to Port 445, in fact messed about with everything I can think of, spent hours on it. I read somewhere to disable C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe-k netsvcs, is this genuine? If so how? Hope you can help, am in despair!

Make sure the host has a username and password configured that is the same as the username and password you are using on the client.

I get this every morning at work. It means I must log onto the server - with password. In my case, that means Drive X:

I think that's what DrewDad said, but he's more technical.

To check if you have a vailid username and password on the host:

net use \\hostname\ipc$

Network path not found
Me again, thanks for your input. Neither machine has been consciously set up with passwords, does this matter? I have tried running your command line, DOS gives me an alternative syntax that includes the word 'computer'. When I try to run this, DOS does not recognise 'computer' as a valid internal or external command, operable program or batch file - what now?? I'm tempted just to go out and buy another copy of XP Home - would this sort the problems? (Strong feeling that XP Pro is upsetting the applecart) Cheers.

XP Pro is more security conscious than XP Home.

"Computer" refers to the name of the computer. You can learn this by running "ipconfig /all" on the host computer and looking at the line that starts "Host Name."

OK, both computers now have XPHome, guess what - no change. I have pinged on IP address and computer names no prob with connectivity. Host can read shared files on client, and client sports internet gateway, however still can't access host from client. I have done 'netsh' command and confirmed exceptions to firewall. Interestingly My Network Places has not appeared on Start Menu - significant? If I type //hostname I get network path not found. In view workgroup computers I get Consult network administrator, you might not have necessary permissions to access. Any thoughts?

No, unfortunately. I generally work with XP Pro.
