NEW YORK ?- Actor Al Lewis, the cigar-chomping patriarch of "The Munsters" whose work as a basketball scout, restaurateur and political candidate never eclipsed his role as Grandpa from the television sitcom, died after several years of failing health. He was 95.
Lewis, with his wife at his bedside, passed away Friday night, said Bernard White, program director at WBAI-FM, where the actor hosted a weekly radio program for years. White made the announcement on the air during the Saturday slot where Lewis usually appeared.
"To say that we will miss his generous, cantankerous, engaging spirit is a profound understatement," White said.
He was quite a fella.
I liked that description - generous, cantankerous and engaging.
He was also in Car 54 Where Are You.
He was one helluva charachter. I caught his radio show a couple of times, and it was a hoot. I'll always think of him as Grandpa Munster though.
Awwww! Poor Grandpa Munster! He'll be missed!
Grampa Munster was the first celebrity I ever saw when I moved to NYC. Poor guy. Well, I guess he lived a pretty good life. We should all be so lucky.
True! And a long life too! I'll never forget him hanging upside down in the Munsters basement!!
