School fundraising records

Are school fundraising (Team/Club) records available to the public? I believe these funds have been used by a parent and coach for other than what they were intended. I am trying to do my research first before I ask for these records as I have a child involved and don't want any repercusions. Are they required to keep detailed records of monies taken in and expenses? Can the Freedom Of Information Act be used to gain these records? I live in Suffolk County in New York. Thank you in advance, Jimmy

FOIA is for FEDERAL records. Depending on where you live you may have either state or local "Open Records" laws that may cover things for public schools. You'd have to check in your area.

Many of these types of groups are required to submit annual reports to the school board so that may be a place to start asking questions. I don't know if those reports would be of much use though. Based on your statement I'd think you'd need fairly detailed records to determine something like what money was spent of what specific items.
