More W3K Server Problems - now COM ports

We have a modem connected to COM1 on an HP Proliant server running W3K server. While connected to it, it suddenly quit working. We can no longer talk to the modem even with Hyperterminal. We connected an XP laptop to it and that works fine. So we moved the modem to a second W3K server and it worked for a little while, then the same problem occurred.

It looks like the COM port has failed but on two machines? Might something be interfering with the COM port or holding it in a disabled state? Where would I look?

It's really strange. The modem/COM port works for awhile, then it will just quit. After that, you cannot reenable the COM port. There must be something that is disabling it in software, but what? Where?

We have now moved the modem to a third W2003 server after two of them gave up the COM1 ghost.
