on-line, off-line, I dont care. I want to look at GEAR , everything from caribeeners to canoes. Ive got Woodsmens supply, Its pretty good for the more techy stuff like incremental tree boring tools to age date your trees.

REI??? never heard of it soz. just google REI???

Sublime, Ive found cabelas to be more expensive than lots of others, and they dont have the depth. Id like to go to one place for item A and another for item B. Cabelas is a dept store and , while it has fishing stuuf, we have a BAss pro shop near Harrisburg that has a better selection than the Cabelas in Hamburg Pa.

Farmer, the selection can be sporadic, but the prices are good at sierratradingpost online.

Thats good to know, being in Chicago there are not too many stores with a good selection of outdoor gear so when I found out about Cabelas I thought I hit the motherload. I mostly go to Army surplus stores, the price is right but not a great selection.

There is a REI not too far from me but I thought that they were very expensive.

Ivan Chouniard started some company, I think it is Patagonia... he was a really good climber in the fifties and sixties. Yeh, I know that's a while ago, but you might check them out.

REI has been very reasonable in my experience. Their original price is often the best (my most recent experience there is pricing boots, not sure about the likes of canoes), and they have great sales.

Here's the Patagonia history link. An old friend knew him (may still, far as I know)

http://www.patagonia.com/culture/patagonia_history.shtml

One of my dates with this old friend was to hear Chouinard speak, back in '63.

Yeah, sierratradingpost has great prices, but when I find what I want, it's usually available in XXSmall, color choice is neon pink. It's worth trying first, then backcountry's online store. Higher, but better availablity.

Anything you'd buy at REI or EMS you can get cheaper at Campmor. Cabelas doesn't carry much for things like climbing gear but are better for clothing/footwear that you might want to wear as casual wear too. Bass Pro Shops are about the same as Cabelas. Both Cabelas and Bass pro have all the clothing you'd ever want for fishing or hunting type activities.

Sierra Trading Post is good as is the Duluth Trading Company.

Two areas that you might wander through in your travels are Natick Outdoor here in Natick, MA or the Kittery Trading Post in Kittery, ME. The LL Bean Outlet and Old Town Canoe Outlet (both off of I-95 in ME) could be interesting side trips too.

For military surplus type stuff check out the Sportsman's Guide.

OH RAPTIOUS JOY. I get home from a day in the field and have all these links to gear shops waiting.

For those into ultra cool nav gear try capjack.com. If that doesnt do just google up Capn JAcks . He has the best everything for flyin blind in a boat.

If it's outdoorsy stores with a military slant, you might check out brigadequartermasters or uscavalry. Use them only for things not available elsewhere. They are not inexpensive. For cutlery, it's bestknives.com. Very slow loading, but the prices and variety are worth the wait. In fact, sometimes their shipping time is quicker than the website.

Now, I know I'm off subject, but I did find a source of straight osage orange. It's bowstickarchery. I knew you'd really care for that one.
