computer load up problems

Reply Sun 15 Jan, 2006 05:08 pm
Starting yesterday I am having problems with loading on my relatively old computer running on windows 98. It gets all the way to loading explorer, but it takes a little longer and a black screen appears just before my background appears and I get an error message. It reads:
Quote:
This program (Explorer) has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
Then in the details drop down it says:
Quote:
EXPLORER has caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at 0167:00401f31.
Registers:
Here there is lots of numbers and letters.
If these nubmers and letters will help please let me know there are maybe 15 or so lines of them. Also I believe the fact that I just downloaded a Download Accelerator (DAP 7.5) may help you to know what is going on. I still have dial-up so I thought I would download it, but it has been on the computer before. I deleted it because I wasn't downloading much, but I have been so I decided to download it again.

Sounds like Explorer is corrupted - bummer. Anyhow, HERE'S what to try first, before giving up and re-installing Windows. If that doesn't help, try plans B and C:

Plan B

Plan C

Good luck.

Oh, BTW - if you don't have a Win9x Emergency Boot Floppy, any machine running Win9x//ME can make one, or you can download one from HERE

Ok last night when I was reading your response I some how missed the first plan of attack "HERE'S" and went straight to plan B, which should have made me think, but I guess I was a little tired. Anyways I tried plan B and I typed what it told me to type but it said the file was not found so I typed "ren explorer.exe explorer.old" and it said the same thing, but then I tried different ways off typing things and I typed in "ren explorer.exe explorer.old" again and it worked. Thinking that something would happen I proceeded to type it in againg when nothing did happen and it said "Duplicate file in use" or somethine like that. I then restarted my computer by pressing Crtl, Alt, Delete; before I had been pressing the restart/reset button which obviously was not right, because nothing happened that time. However this time when it was beginning to start up instead of bringing up the illegal operation message it said "The file 'c:\explorer.exe' is not a valid Ms-Dos program file. It may be damaged. Should I now try the "HERE'S" or what?

Give it a shot - if you can get there - hope you don't hafta reinstall Windows first - that would suck. Do you have a Windows install disk?
