I'm having a weird problem with my audio in Windows. Here's what seems to be happening:
None of my computer's system sounds or normal audio works. Audio in iTunes or in Windows Media Player works perfectly, but sounds for things like maximizing or minimizing a window don't work. Other sounds, like sounds in flash webpages or in videos that are embedded in webpages, also do not work (things like little flash games or clips on Google Video). The only sound that works is when a file that is on my computer is played by a player that is on my computer (WMP or iTunes, for example).
I checked my system sounds settings, and everything looked normal, except that when I highlight or choose a system sound in the list, the little "Play" icon remains grayed out, and I don't believe it should do that (normally you can click it to preview the sound). Would that possibly have anything to do with it?
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Go to Control Panel and double-click on the Sounds And Devices icon.
When the window opens click the Soudns tab at the top.
There you will see the dropdown menu for Sound Scheme. Click the wee black triange to the right of the box and click on Windows Default.
Hit the OK button and you should be good to go.
I'm afraid that doesn't solve my problem. The small play icon in that window remains permanantly grayed out - It doesn't allow me to click on it to play any sounds. The sound scheme itself isn't the problem. The problem is that the only sounds that play are ones that are media files (that are stored on my computer) that are played by players (that are also stored on my computer). IE: WMP and iTunes work fine, but sounds from online flash websites, videos or music that are embedded in websites, etc, don't.
