I have a question (serious if you don't mind)
I was wondering how many of you believed that there was a actual person named Jesus (New Testament) that was portrayed in the the bible?
Leaving out if he was the actual Son of God or not.

Sure. There may have been several people named that.

I know a guy today that is named Jesus.

Weird. But true.

I think it may have been possible, except, of course, nobody was calling him Jesus--Yeshuah, more like. But it is equally as plausible, if not more so, that the Jesus character is fictive, an avatar for a body of belief. I believe that whether an individual, or a fictive avatar, the story derives from the Essenes, and was corrupted pronto, especially after Saul of Tarsus got his hands on it.

I would assume so, but there is no way that I really could know for sure.

Maybe, probably, I don't know but it doesn't matter because I like the message, whatever the source. I just don't like what was done to/with it.

I don't know.

I bet it would surprise us to actually see what he looked like, if he existed. Sometimes I wonder...

What do you picture him looking like?

I don't know, even to a reasonable degree of certainty. And that's because I don't think it matters very much. But I would think it unlikely that anything we know of christianity today has much in common with the reality of that time 2000 years ago, and that includes the plot as well as the cast.

The fact that there isn't any evidence for 'biblical jesus' in and of itself didn't convince me there never was such a person.
However...
Knowledge of the origins of christianity certainly sent me in that direction.
Knowledge of other, older, parallel god myths to me serves as evidence against 'biblical jesus', as do the apparent 'holes' in the writings of historians from the 'time of jesus'
I would like to believe jesus actually existed. I'd like to believe hercules actually existed too.
But the evidence just doesn't show that.

It's plausible, but not a certainty.

To me, as I have often stated, JC was a composite of the notions and perhaps two or three real people of the time.

I do. Though setanta was right that they would have called him Yeshuah.

Are you keeping a running total on this? There seem to be a lot of "I don't know's" out there.
