I am trying to network my desktop and laptop computers through a wireless network. I have a NetGear Rangemax Wireless router and I have not been able to get this to work.
I have tried using the set up wireless network wizard from my desktop but I have a problem when I get to the step where it asks me to connect my USB jump drive to my wireless access point. The NetGear RangeMax does not have a USB port to connect to.
Am I screwed or is there another way to do this?
I'm sure this is a simple problem for users like contrex but it is something that I hope some one here can help me out with.
I appreciate any help.
The PC you want to have wireless access needs to have a wireless adapter fitted to it.
That will either be a USB thingy or it will be a PCI card.
Make sure you have that installed properly.
The plug the router into the wall, make sure your ADSL connection is fine and connect to it on the PC and you're ready to go.
I'm not at all sure why it's asking you to connect a USB thing to the router. It shouldn't be.
Dunno for sure - it may be asking not for a physical connection, but rather asking that the USB wireless adapter be configured to connect to the wireless router - prolly a configuration page for the adapter from which you can set the appropriate network parameters, allowing the adapter to communicate with the router.
I think maybe the network wizard is trying to set up an "ad hoc" network; a direct connection between two PCs. It creates a configuration file, which you then take to the second PC.
There should be setup instructions with the router. Follow those instructions instead.
Just for info here's a link to a pic I drew and scanned explaining the basic configuration to someone else a while ago :

Thanks for the help. I'll try these suggestions and will let you know how they turn out.
It means "Bookmark" - sorta like lifting your leg on a thread so you can find it again in your "My Posts" list..
Ahhhhh !
Gotcha.
Thanks Timber'.
