Suggestions for a new laptop?

Hi - ringing in the new year and looking for a new laptop. What I would use it for:

- basic Office functions for personal projects
- heavy use of video clips, music download
- lots of digital photo storage
- no gaming or programming needs

I'm not particularly concerned with size/weight. Something under $2000 would be great. I've never had a Mac but am contemplating. All of my previous files are in Windows. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The files you have can easily be converted to work on a Mac.
Word files etc...

Thanks for your post, Heliotrope. Another question for you: would you happen to have any opinions on personal finance software for Mac? I heard that Quicken is the only option and the Mac version is not very reliable... I am using Microsoft Money and am not sure if this will be an easy transition.

I bought an HP Pavillion from Costco.com for under $700 that will do everything you are asking, and more. I love it. The built in wireless is truly amazing, if you don't have issues with "borrowing" others bandwidth, this thing finds wireless networks faster than you can blink an eye.

I've been looking at HP Pavillion as well - the dv1000 series in particular. Seems to have gotten good reviews from Cnet and PCMag. Did you get the bluetooth option as well? Costco is a great suggestion, by the way.

I've got both Mac and PC laptops and I use then for different things.
My accountant takes care of my finances so I have no idea what personal finance software is all about to be honest.

If you're used to using a PC then you might as well go with the inertia and get a PC laptop.
Unless you really do want to get a Mac for a specific purpose.
You'd have to buy the Mac versions of the software to read your files though.

Yeah I thought about the same thing re: software. My wanting an iBook is all vanity no practicality, so I should get a PC notebook. Thanks for everyone's voice of reason...

Just saw that Apple revealed new computers with Intel components. Any initial thoughts? http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

Apparently the word on the underground grapevine is 'don't buy one yet'.
They had to ditch many different and better models from the range using Intel *spit* *spit* processors because of availability issues before the launch.

So wait around a bit and see what happens.
The best of the bunch are yet to come.
