Another 3 hour surgery on a man who probably will never regain consciousness. How can the family let this physical torture continue?

Just because the doctors have the skill and technology to prolong his life, wouldn't it be humane to let the poor old man go?

Maybe, but he was a national leader, which attaches some nation-wide emotion to the question of his death.
