Your CD problem tends to be pretty common if you have low-quality CDs. I'm sure they all look the same to you, but some are actually better than others. You could look
here for a comparison between CD brands.
The CD quality, however, probably has nothing to do with your CD drive refusing to open, so it may be a problem with the software you're using to write to the CD. If the drive ever gets stuck again, wait for the cd to stop spinning, then take a paperclip and push it into the little hole on the face of your drive (it should be somewhere on the bottom, generally lower-right). BE CAREFUL when you do this, I've never actually tried it and I've heard about damage to the CD or CD drive if you don't actually wait for the CD to stop spinning.
