Hi, I have windows xp home edition cd. I tried to install it in my friend

computer, but before finishing it asked for another cd that has service

pack 2 I guess. This cd isn't included in the package. Also, is there any

difference between professional and home edition service pack ?

The Service Pack is the same for Home or Pro, and is available for download HERE - be aware it is a 266MB file; even with broadband, downloading it will take a while, with a dialup connection it likely is impractical to attempt. The CD is available free of charge HERE

I'm puzzled by your report that the install process called for a Service Pack CD - it is to be expected an upgrade install would request an install disc for the original operating system, the one being upgraded, or if you are attempting to load an original, pre-service pack version of Win XP on top of a version of XP which already has a service pack installed, you will get a "cannot proceed; newer version is already installed" sorta message, but other than trying to install an older version of XP over a newer one, for an upgrade to a pre-XP Windows version or a full clean install, a Windows XP install proceedure should care not a bit for service pack status.

Can you remember or reproduce the exact, verbatim message you received?

Hi timberlandko, I think mine was the upgrade version of home edition and

it asked for the sp cd as said before. Unfortunately, I don't remember the

exact message that popped on Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I use the pro now. Is there a difference between the two?

Professional has a lot more features that most home users won't use, such as an internet server and several networking tools. It's a lot more expensive.

Hi roverroad. I understand that the home edition is used widely on laptops,

but the professional is the best though. I guess.

Pro offers few if any advantages to the typical user. The features which differ are of little practical use outside an administrative environment. If it makes you feel better to spend the extra money, go right ahead. I will say that if you're unsure which version would be best for you, and why, you're an excellent candidate for the Home version.
