If I save to cd a bunch of word97 documents, will I be able to recall them into xp?

As long as you write them properly, you will be able to read them just as if they were on your hard disc.
I do this regularly to obtain snapshots (backups) of files for later reading or editing.
Remember that you can't edit and resave them to CD unless you use a rewritable CD. You can save different version though, until the CD is full (just like you could with those things called floppies).
Read up about 'closing' a CD (you can then not add any more content).
I'm not expert at this procedure so someone else may give more precise instructions.

Thanks very much. Now I'm going to lighten up my old hard drive of about 2gb of stuff dating back to 2002. It's an old machine with a 20gb hd, but I love it so as long as it runs, I'm going to use it. I know it's aging and could fail in the near future. Thank you again.
