I have been advised that there is nothing I can do about this because no one bothers to create for Windows 98 an up to date spy-ware or anti-virus software that will keep my computer clean. My only recourse is to buy another computer with a software operating system for which there exists suitable anti-virus software to keep it clean.

You need a new advisor. The one you currently have is either ignorant or lying.

Spybot Search & Destroy still supports their Win98 version.

And Ad-Aware is compatible with Win98 too.

For Anti-virus software you can run McAfee, F-Secure or AVG

All of these are current versions and have up-to-date detection libraries. I'm sure there are others as well but I just verified these 5 in under 5 minutes.

The problem is the price.

There are very effective free solutions - money need not be a barrier to safe and effective control of your own computer, Win9X or otherwise.

Oh, coberst, that new operating system was due this year, but has been pushed into Q2 of '06. You have months yet before your new XP machine becomes obsolecent.

Couldn't agree more, I have 2 machines here at the house that they kids use mostly, well one is suppose to be the "family" machine but we all know how that goes bith running 98 and I have control over them,

As fishin pointed out there are programs to clean your computer and run just fine and do a great job on 98 and any other OS.

Was pondering reinstalling 98 on another I like to infect the machines and then find the best course of action for cleaning them,
But the kids will usually give me a live machine to work on its only a matter of time Laughing

Just my 2 cents worth
