.exe? Backdoor.IRC.Bot

Hi.. well I have this strange virus on my computer..
Basically Norton AntiVirus tells me I have a virus

Object Name: C:\WINNT\system32\.exe
Virus Name: Backdoor.IRC.Bot

But when I go to the folder, there is nothing just called ".exe" and I've run a full system scan, scanned with Ad-Aware and protected with Spyware Blaster, had a look at my HijackThis log for anything unusual but there's nothing I can spot.. usually I can get viruses off easily with these 4 programs but nothing has come up at all, nothing infected or anything, just this damn pop-up which only comes on maybe after the computer has been on for about an hour..

It might be something to do with a file I downloaded as the problem started since then. I've had Winamp Pro, Limewire Pro, Opera 8 and some .iso file of Windows XP that I deleted anyway.. but it's still coming up so I can't imagine what it is... and I don't even use IRC!

Anyone have any ideas? Much appreciated! xxx

My idea is that you got it through "Free" software, P2P filesharing, Chat/Instant Messaging, or email. See: Symantec Security Response Backdoor.IRC.Bot.B

My first suggestion would be to make sure your version of Norton Antivirus is full up to date and configured to scan all files, then run a full system scan while in Safe Mode.

A comprehensive preliminary procedure for ridding your system of yuckware and hardening it against future re-infestation may be found HERE.

If you elect to go that way, return to this topic with the resulting logs and reports. Also, if you do wish to pursue that avenue, you may find it convenient to click "Turn on email updates" down at the bottom right of this page; doing so will cause a notification to be sent to the email address you used at the time of A2K registration whenever a reply is posted to this page.

This one has me curious Rolling Eyes

I wonder if a silent runners log might show something,

Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

If in fact you do have Nortons you will receive the prompt but allow it to run
