I have this MSSEARCHNET haunting my PC.
And also detected smthg name *schmidth** that I detected from SpyBot Search & Destroy. But couldn't be destroyed.

You may find the preliminary cleanup proceedure detailed in This Topic an effective starting point. Hundreds have. If you choose to go that way, post the requisite logs to your topic here. You also may find it convenient to click "Turn on email updates" down at the lower right of this page; doing so will cause a message to be sent to the email address you used when registering with A2K when a reply is posted to this thread.

I believe it is finding "Smitfraud"
The following method has been very successful in removing it

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Download SpyAxeFix.exe © noahdfear, and save it to your desktop.
  • Close all other programs and windows.
  • Double click SpyAxeFix.exe, then click Start to extract the tool to it's own folder.
  • Open the SpyAxeFix folder and double click the SpyAxeFix.bat to start the tool.
  • At one point when the tool runs, your taskbar will dissappear, and your computer will restart when the tool completes.
  • A text file named spyaxe.txt will be created in the SpyAxeFix folder.
  • Post the contents of that log please.

Hi Don,

The page u directed me to indicate that the SpyAxeFix is integrated with SmitRem v2.8. That's what I've used.

Does the PC looks clean now ? Or there are still hidden ????

Lets do this

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click Yes.


Please run this online scan ActiveScan
At the end of the scan it gives you an option to save the log do so, remeber where you save it to post it back here along with a fresh HJT log please

I'm gonna go ahead and toss this post in here anyway, with recommendation repeated that picca await confirmation from Don before going with any of my recommendations - though it appears Don and I are thinking pretty much along the same lines, more or less]


picca, I recommend you continue with Don77; you're in good hands there. However, I doubt he'll mind if I offer my observations, and I expect he will endorse my suggestions. Still, while its your call, I'd feel better if you wait for Don's confirmation before following my suggestions; this one is his baby, so to speak, and I certainly don't want to confuse you or get in his way.

To answer your questions, if you do not intend to purchase and activate a subscription to EWIDO, there isn't much point configuring it for active, real-time protection. Don't delete it just yet, just no need to have it run at boot. When your system has been confirmed clean, then it would be fine to delte EWIDO, but untill then, it might be useful in ongoing disinfection work.

SpyAxeFix indeed has been integrated into the latest version of SmitRem, which is v2.8, as you mention. Assuming you downloaded the legitimate SmitRem, and ran it per the author's instructions, it should have done what it could to remove any currently known SpyAxe variant. Those instructions detail that the tool be run from safe mode, and specifically recommend that running the tool be followed with an online scan-and-clean with Panda ActiveScan. If your use of SmitRem v2.8 was not fully consistent with the author's instructions, I recommend you repeat the process, following the instructions exactly and using the version of SmitRem downloaded from the author's page. If you do repeat the Smitem process as directed, the resulting report should be saved and posted in your next reply.

I recommend you download and install Steve Gould's Cleanup4. When it has been installed, configure it for "Custom Cleanup" as follows:

Place a checkmark next to ONLY the following options:

Empty Recycle Bins

Delete Cookies

Delete Prefetch files

Cleanup! All Users


Click "OK" to start the process - be patient it could take a while - and reboot normally when it reports it has completed and asks if you wish to reboot.

One way or the other, a fresh PandaScan report would be helpful. I think you should re-visit the site and repeat the scan. When Panda ActiveScan completes, it will present you with a report as it did before; you should save that report and post it here with your next reply.


Your most recent ( Posted: Mon Dec 12, 2005 23:43 Post: 1724122 ) HJT log, timestamped 1:40:22 PM, on 12/13/2005 does not show any recognized yuckware signatures, so in that repect, it "looks clean". That does not necessarily mean your system is clean.

I suggest also that you update EWIDO, and have it run full system scan-and-cleans first in safe mode then from a normal boot while disconnect from the internet and with no other security/privacy applications active or running. Both Ewido logs should be saved and posted in your next reply, with notation as to which is which.

Your next reply also should include a scan-and-save-log report from HJT run immediately after a fresh, normal boot following the completion of all the above, with no other windows, browsers, email, or messaging clients open or running in the background.

Finally, with respect to your HJT log, prior to doing any of the above, I recommend you launch HJT while in a normal boot state, preferably immediately following a fresh boot and while not connected to the internet, and of course, as always, with nothing else open or running. When the scan has completed, place a checkmark next to these entries only (if reported):

Click "Fix Checked", confirm if prompted, and when the repair has completed, locate and launch Cleanup4 again, letting it run to completion then reboot. These entries are not malicious, however they are unnecessary, referring to orphan or deactivated files.

One other thing catches my eye - this entry:

If you do not recognize or cannot confirm those IP addresses highlighted above in red (202.188.0.133[/color] and 202.188.1.5 ) as being related to and required by your ISP, or by a proxy server you knowingly employ, I would get rid of them too. They refer to a Malaysian IP, and unless you know them to be legitimate, benign, and intended to be on your system, there is little chance they're there for any good purpose. Check that out carefully.

So - in your next reply, if Don77 agrees with my suggestions above, please provide a fresh SmitRem report if appropriate (depending on how you ran it the first time), a fresh PandaScan report, the 2 EWIDO reports, suitably identified so we can tell which is which, and a fresh HJT log.

Also useful would be information on how your machine is behaving following the proceedures - does it seem to you the issue has been resolved?

Smitrem is the current version, That was my bad had a senior moment Noahdfear had updated it back on 12-6-05 to handle the removal of spyaxe, which it did Very Happy

Hold off on making the changes with HJT for the moment please, HJT will sometimes show a file as missing in the 02 and 03 section although the file is really there, Although it appears you have or had 2 Anti Virus programs running on your system most times removing an AV is messy business Shocked

The 017 is a bad entry likely a varient of wareout and we will deal with once we are sure that smitfraud and its friends are done with.

Please run Cleanup! Ewido and the Active scan, Please post back the report.txt from Ewido and the log from Active along with a fresh HJT log please

You can keep Ewido Timber is correct with the 30 day trial offer you get the full protection after the 30 days you can keep Ewido and update manually and scan with it just the same as you would with Ad-aware, spybot and the likes
