I just installed a new hard drive running Windows XP. Is there any way I can network this machine to my old one running Win98 ?
Certainly, provided you have the requisite hardware and/or cabling to effect the connection. In WinXP, the setup is a simple matter of opening "My Network Places", launching the New Network Setup Wizard, filling in the dialog boxes, allowing the Wizard to create a Network Setup floppy, and running that floppy on the '98 machine, responding appropriately to the prompts that come up there.
While not quite so simple, machines running operating systems of different families easily may be networked. For example, a home network might consist of machines operating under Windows family operating systems, Apple family systems, and Linux family systems, including machines utilizing different variants of each or any family of operating system. Some attention must be paid to reconciling differences in the way the various machines handle file types, and the file system differences among the machines, but its done all the time.
Well,
That was easy...Thanks timber. I don't know why I had it in my head that linking 98 and XP would cause me headaches.
Yer weccum ... glad to help. Now the fun really begins ... If you think one machine can be a headache, just wait 'till you start to discover all the entertainment potential inherent to networking
