koala ko (as in cone) a (as in car) la (as in la de da)
NOT repeat NOT koala
bear
Koalas dont usually drink water (their water requirement is met 90% by eucalypt leaves) unless they are sick so i suspect this one is pretty sick. Still interesting/exciting to see one in the backyard. Not my backyard by the way friend of a friend sent the photos via email.
Amazing. I hope the little guy's okay. Thanks for the pics.
Haven't really seen any critters lately, probably because it's dark when I drive in the morning, and in the afternoon I just want to get myself home. Hmmm.
I saw my first roadrunner the other day - that is, other than in a zoo - in a shopping mall parking lot.
Also in the last few weeks I've twice seen a field of birds streak by my car window and I didn't have time to get a real gander at them - Diane says they are probably cranes..
Again, those would be new for me. The field was right near the Rio Grande. They reminded me momentarily of shorebirds like godwichs (however you spell those).

Godwits (well, I was close in the spelling, but no cigar...)
look like this - but I doubt I saw a field of them in New Mexico..

Deer. Lots of deer. Some dead, some alive. Saw a beautiful 8-point back during the rut crushed under the front end of a Ford Crown Victoria - killed the car too.
I'm going turkey hunting in May. Hopefully I see some turkeys!

Skunk this morning. Stinkeroonie for hours. Smells a bit like a gasoline spill. Oof. RP says he even ended up incorporating it into his dream.
This is mating season for skunks.
Quote:The breeding season for the striped skunk is February and March. Males begin to range widely at this time, often leaving their own territories in search of a mate. During mating season, the males are very excitable and spray large animals and humans at random.
The female skunk carries her young just over 2 months. Litter sizes range from three to ten, although the average number is four to five. The young skunks, called kits, are born blind and without fur. The female suckles the kits for 6-8 weeks until they can hunt for themselves. The young stay with their mother, often sharing a den with several families until the end of winter and the next mating season.

So you're saying there's a skunk red-light district in my neighborhood?
I wonder what that'll do to the property values.
Jespah--
Ya gotta lot of Stud Skunks out to impress their Bimbos.
Ya don't like the Stud Skunks rappin' on the street corners?
Bit soon here yet for skunks - them and porcupines show up here around the same time - late March, early April. The eagles have been doing their courtship dogfights all over the sky the last few days, though ... really spectacular.
Seaside skunks are precocious--untimely ardent.
Our basement still reeks of Eau d'Skunk Amour. Fortunately we haven't heard skunk rapping yet, but anything is possible.
Forgot to report, I saw a redtail at work on Thursday. It did not appear to be headed straight for any VP's offices, which I took to be a good sign.
Redtail hawks don't "do" carrion.
Now if you saw a murder of crows....
... does that mean I should fear for the marketing department?
The Marketing Department would be Dead Meat.
This young owl (along with a buddy) appeared about a week ago on a 10 acre plot we are revegetating. The appearance of top level predators is always a good sign. The trees we planted 8 years ago arn't really big enough to support a family but the existing 80 year old gums should have some suitable hollows. Heres hoping.
Definitely, here's hoping for some feathered tenants for ya.
