Chooks! I knew that one. But, boy is it an odd term for us 'mercins.
Not to mention us in the middle with real naivete....
(scratching stone again)
Chook as in cook, not kook or choo choo train.
Dadpad, THAT I didn't know.
I saw an emu today on the way to work but didnt have the camera.
Thats eemew, not emoo to you disedumacated murricans.
I only meet emus in crossword puzzles.
I saw a cow on the side of the road today. Are there cows in Australia?
And, by the way, it is pronounced like "How" and not like "Mow".
I saw a Wapiti the other day by the freeway.
That's pronounced "elk backstrap".
i saw what i think was a seal swimming in the fort point channel (near summer street, for those who know the area)...
i guess that would make it a harbor seal
Region saw a harbor seal,
at least... he thought it was
but when he took another look
he saw it was a frog
Saw a smallish kingbrown snake today.
He was quite happy to ignore me and continue on his way. As was I.
Searched for a woodpecker thread, and this one was listed.
Oh wow....
Dawn was breaking, sitting on couch, looking out doorwall, waiting for eyes to wake up. Something flew in, still a hundred or so feet up. Kind of looks like a dove. Flew down, parked itself in the poison sumac tree. Getting lighter out. I could see it wasn't a dove. It wa the most beautiful northern flicker woodpecker that I've ever seen. I grabbed my binoculars, and for almost twenty minutes,(until those darn bluejays came), I watched this bird munch on the sumac buds.
I've never studied one of these birds up close. I kid you not, when I say, it's one of the most beautiful birds I've ever seen.
I was going to post a picture, but, none will do, what I saw, justice.
Great thread jespah.
Thank you. I haven't seen much wildlife lately unless you count our neighbors. Walked along the waterfront at lunch and didn't see birds but they could be heard.
Where have I been? I've never seen this thread till today.
I live in a formerly rural area that has been built up with pretty bad planning, but a lot of the woods remain.
Most recently, there are a pair of ducks that noisily fly overhead and hang-out nibbling on the grass. I wonder if they mate for life too? Because they seem to have taken up residence in this general area.
Not long ago, I was walking off the Metro heading home and saw a little red fox. Boy, was he/she pretty.
Two Canadian Geese in the road as I turned out of the parking lot and excelerated..... BRAAAAKE! They were in no hurry. The tail feathers of one brushed my drivers side door as I went between them. They weren't fazed by the car behind me cursing my tail lights either.
I love that they let us live in their world.
I was at the computer and a small pigeon feather floated down outside my window. I watched as it swung back and forward, slowly making its way to the ground. Then I saw another, and yet another. I ran outside hoping to see the hawk ripping the little guy apart, but he seems to be on the roof where I can't see him. Sigh.
Woohoo! I just climbed up onto the roof (fear of heights be damned!) and scared off what looked like a sharp-shinned hawk. It's not likely to be living in the city, but it sure as hell wasn't a red-tail. My heart's still pounding! And, that wasn't a pigeon it was eating!
I have pictures of what was left of the bird. I spared you, the viewer, the shot of inside its cranium or of it's guts.
