Sigh.

All I have are field mice who have come in from the cold.

That isn't quite true: I have an assortment of birds at the feeders.

yesterday I noticed a peculiar noise coming from the vicinity but couldnt track it down.

Today I found this.

behind the sign.

In case you cant make it out this wasp nest is chock full of (harmless) spiders.

Oh, I'd just move....

I've dealt with black widows, field mice, and paper wasps in my studio. Oh, and a raccoon that landed in our gallery bathroom from the ceiling not long after I'd been in there in the enclosure...

but really, that grosses me out.

To quote Homer Simpson 'It's funny coz it's true...'

Dad, what sort of camera do you use? That focal length is a bit short for a 55mm lens, isn't it? Or is it just a big wasp?

So wait, I'm confused. Is the back of the sign a pantry full of dead spiders for wasps to eat, or is it a pantry full of dead wasps for spiders to eat?

I just filled my bird feeders.

Chickadees repeat the dee-dee-dee part of their call to rate predators for the avian community. This time of year, I'm a dee-dee-dee but by the time the snow flies I'll be a double-digit dee or even a single-comment dee.

That's interesting. I didn't know that. I'll have to listen to my ChickaDee's more carefully.

I just did a count earlier today, and apparently me and my dog are a six-dee alarm. Sometimes seven.

I felt a bit insulted.... even after I spend all that money on bird food... ungrateful little peepers.

I just discovered (I think) that blue jays make more calls than I had known. One sounds like a hawk's cry. So, I just looked up blue jays and they say they are expert hawk mimickers! Wow. Cool. Can't wait to tell the landlady (she's worried about her small dogs).

Small dogs are very nutritious if you are a hawk.

Australia, land of equal opportunity for all insects (& other crawly, flying, biting, stinging things).

This little bugger was flitting around in my sons room last night. Hiow he got there is a mystery.

We had too throw a sheet over him to catch him so we could transport him outside.

Very sharp teeth they have too.

Photos are really pretty poor but i'm excusing myself as it was after midnight.

Someone is stealing my hickory nuts.

The township walking track is bordered by several shagbark hickory trees. I'm an autumn amasser. I pocket acorns and horse chestnuts and other plunder--edibility is not a consideration--and fill little ornamental bowls to contemplate through a winter of dormancy.

Some critter is stealing my hickory nuts.

I was using one for a pocket piece--the sharp end is excellent for focusing the mind--and this morning my pocket piece had vanished.

Today is a day for Mousebait.
