uploading and downloading and why do they occur at different kbps speeds?
Uploading - copying a file from your computer to another computer via a network (eg internet)
Downloading - copying a file from another computer to your computer via a network (eg internet)
Typically they are different if you have an asymetric connection, like ADSL.
Technically ADSL is chosen by ISPs because most of the action is at the server end, which is also where all the wires join, which means there's more noise where the signal is strongest.
This suits most customers because they download a heck of a lot more than they upload.
For simplicity; Uploading is transferring a file from your system to another. Downloading is pulling a file from another system onto yours. (If you were to send someone an e-mail with an attached picture you would have to upload the pic from your PC to the mail server. When they open the e-mail they'd download the pic from their mail server to view it.).
Downloading is genrally faster because ISPs often give you faster download bandwidth than they do for uploading. For a regular session of web browsing that usually works pretty well but if you do a lot of uploading you get screwed on the deal.
Got it. Thank you both for the explanation.
