Web site design

What would be the best way to design this type of website?
I would like to start a site that lets people for a small fee post their item they would like to sell on to a web database.
1. The customer would enter the site 2. have the option to just view the database for free 3. have the option to pay a fee and post their items for sale.
The items would stay on for a pre-programed period of time lets say 7 days from the time they post their ad.
Is it possible to design a site that accepts and verifys payment, lets the customer enter his or her ad on the site and controls when the ad will stop running(7 days from entry for example) and takes it off.

If you have some ideas or can help point me in the right direction.
Maybe I can use some type of web design tools or software or maybe have a third party design this for me.

Thankyou in advance.

George

There are tons of third party options for accepting/confirming the payment.

The rest of the functionality is fundamentally database driven so ASP/Access or ColdFusion or PHP/MySQL would be my technologies of choice.

I would have a serious look at my business case however - I think EBay have pinched your idea and developed it a bit.

There are plenty of scripts out there that you can use for this. Look into "auction script" or "classifieds script" in search engines or hotscripts.com for some.

But hingehead is right, you are likely barking up the wrong tree.

Unless you have really good niche positioning you are just making yet another clone of very large (and in the cases of Google Base and craigslist: FREE) and successful sites.

You need good niche positioning to pull it off in todays net market.
