I'm no expert but it could take MONTHS to get onto a search engine unless you register the site with those search engines.
i just submitted to google and took me 4-6 weeks
I can launch a site and have it in search engines within 60 hours. And I never "submit" to search engines.
See, it's links to the site, it's links to the site, it's links to the site.....
it varies enormously, some sites we did could be on google within a week, while ive seen others take months, I think the longest ive seen is 4 months, but im sure others have waited longer.
As for making the top 10, you need to convince google your site is better than all other sites under your keywords, the best way to do this is by having as many sites link to yours as possible.
Next make sure the keywords appear frequently on your page (avoid flash as search egnines ignore it), if they are surrounded by a header tag they will be more important than a keyword in a <p> tag.
There are loads of other ways, but if your in a competitive area you will possibly never make it.
Ranking
I think it depends on numerous things ... not one thing in particular .. I know with mine it has sometimes taken months, other times not long at all ... But getting your site seen is the main thing .... especially with good content and links
