well that's kinda weird and interesting, isn't it. as i recall, for the last couple of years, they'd only been doing annual renewals. thanks for the update, masterCraven.

Not much. Domain registration can cost less than 10 bucks a year so the real cost is the server and bandwidth. Registering for many years is just an easy way to avoid the nuisance of renewal.

It's not just Bob Hope. I see this happen time and again with many public figures. The person dies, unaware of the antagonism of segments of the public, because they wait til they can't defend themselves anymore to attack them. It just seems kind of perverse or something.

cjhsa - it looks like edgar's post is meant for the Christopher Hitchens on Bob Hope thread. Not sure if you were posting there or not. Perhaps a bit of crossed wiring.

When it seemed like abuzz might disappear with the domain deadline, I began to think, oh, no...there are some threads there I'd like a printout of. But priinting out one digression thread would yield a book. I treasure some of those.

Plus, I keep links to some of the cooking threads...and would want to print those out if abuzz collapse were iminent. I say this, but would I do it? I might at least go make some exerpts.

I've been saving favourite threads, or bits of them, as I've been going along. There was the soup thread, a green bean thread, a comfort food thread, hmmmmmmmmm is there a theme here?

Yeah, the comfort food one was one of mine, and maybe the soup thread (Kitchen soup?). But do I have them saved? No.....
Well, actually, I may have them saved, but not printed out. That just gives the link, doesn't it, not the contents if the site dies....or am I wrong?

It's not how important it was, Rae - it is how important it is to some of us. There are some people who are simply not going to come here. If we want to stay in touch with them, Abuzz is the way. There are some ongoing threads that have meaning beyond Abuzz, but have meaning in part because of Abuzz.

There are some threads that I don't think could happen here. It's a personal opinion, but not one that I am alone in holding. There are other types of threads that do better here.

A2K is a good site, with pros and cons, just as Abuzz was, and is. They're different sites, with occasionally overlapping constituencies. It's like the cooking forum at Taunton that I frequent. Many of the members there are also members of egullet - but not all of them are, as not all egullet posters are members of Cooks Talk. They serve slightly different purposes.

Great thing about the net. Lots of room for lots of different sites.

Very well said. But, it still kinda pisses me off that 'those in charge' didn't take more responsibility.

I bow to your response, ehBeth. And bid you farewell for tonight. I'm a happy camper here. But, that's me. I don't expect anyone to feel the way I do.

G'night, my friend. Sweet dreams.

What Rae said.

I'm very grateful the grown-ups here let this kid join in after too long at Abuzz.
