How cool... a vacation day for a horse race. I always thought those Ozzies had their heads on straight.

Actually, Piffka, I think it became a holiday in Victoria through default. So many people took the day off anyway, that it seemed a sensible idea to make it official. Very Happy

I was up at our Comms Branch and doing some training. Of course we had to stop and watched the race on a big screen (being at Comms has its benefits). What a beautiful, beautiful mare. What a stunning run. No I didn't have any money on her but the spectacle was brilliant.

It's going to be nutso in Port Lincoln (where her owners live) tonight Very Happy

I forgot that it was even on until I heard the result on the radio while driving. I didn't bother with a bet or a sweep this year. The horses I've picked for the last few years are still running. You would have needed a big bet on Makybe to win, considering how short her odds were.

$144 million was spent by Australians gambling on the Melbourne Cup today. Amazing. Shocked

So let's see: We have a population of around 24 million (last time I looked). Lots of folk like me didn't spend a cent on gambling today. Many others would have had a small flutter on the sweep at work, or at the TAB .... I guess that means some folk spent a fortune! Bet there'll be a few really bad headaches tomorrow!

Port Lincoln is probably going to be declared non-functional Very Happy

I have to admit not backing anything. But I was pleased with the Diva's run. And Glen Boss' ride.

I blame Kerry Packer for all that punting Very Happy

Yeah, it probably was him! Laughing

I'm not into horse racing in a big way, but I must admit shedding a few tears while watching the evening news, when the Diva won. The jockey was obviously so moved he was weeping with joy just before the finishing line. Think I must be going a bit strange in my old age! <sniff> What a really beautiful horse, though! Stunning!

I ain't as weird as y'all . . . i don't walk aroun' all day upside down, with the blood rusing to my head, makin' bets on who the fastest courtesan in New South Wales might be . . .

It's an institution & a perfectly carefree holiday (for some of us), dammit! Personally, I would much prefer a holiday for a horse race than to commemorate some some "important" event related to war. Too many holidays are like that! Hey, let the workers have some fun!

Ah Set the Diva is a lady - not that I'm suggesting courtesans aren't of course - but it was a magical run, just magical. I don't often wax lyrical about horse racing (I had shares in a mare once so I don't get emotional about what is essentially a business) but this was special.

Well, any foolishness which is good for a day off has my approval, and the more so if you enjoyed the event on its own merits. Far be it from me to condemn the racing of chippies if it gets you a day off and gives you true enjoyment.
