But only for a couple of hours. It's the Melbourne Cup this afternoon. Please don't call on us - we're not answering the door or the phone. If you're planning an invasion can you please hold it over for a couple of hours and we'll be right with you. Very Happy

Will somebody get me a gun there's a feral dog in the top paddock.

extract from A dream of the Melbourne Cup
1886 A.B. Patterson

Under the whip! with ears flat back
under the whip! though sinews crack
No sign of base white feather
Stick to it now for your breedings sake
stick to it now though your hearts should break
While the yells and roars make the grandstand shake
They come down the straight together.

Hooray for the Melbourne Cup! I have no idea of whose running (apart from MD, of course! How could escape all the media hype?... & she just won, this very minute, as I type! Laughing ) Anyway, the reason I'm so enamoured of the Cup?: It's a public holiday, that's why! (Yes, that's right. For a horse race! Yahoo!Laughing Razz )

Yeah, not to be sneezed at, k! Of course, being a highly principled person, I considered boycotting this holiday & going to work instead ....

All over Oz right now, someone is busily working out who won 1st, 2nd & third prizes in the office sweeps. (those folk who don't live in Melbourne, that is.) Back to work soon for most, though.

Considered boycotting, eh?

So, you literally get a couple hours off and then it's back to work for the rest of the day?

No, not me, k. I'm in Melbourne. We have a public holiday! All day! Very Happy Much of the rest of the country has a "Cup sweep" break then returns to work. I feel so badly for them! Razz

All day here littlek its a public holiday in Victoria (yahoo) The rest of Australia will stop for the duration of the race then after suitable hooraying and swearing depending on the result of your particular office sweep it will be nose to the grindstone again, some places close for a half day some a full day some make it an extra long weekend (sat sun mon and tue.)
Good horse Maykabe diva possibly as good as Pharlap maybe even better.

Wow! Took a break to watch here, so happy that lovely mare won!!!!!

I find racing to be a yucky world around those wonderful horses, but to see a champion like her win was great.

heehee - and I liked how besotted with her the jockey was, and how thrilled he was!!!!

How cool... a vacation day for a horse race. I always thought those Ozzies had their heads on straight.

Wish we could see this race here, but I haven't seen it on any channels. (Maybe tomorrow on the BBC early news?)
