Should i take a gap year in Oz need advice

Reply Mon 31 Oct, 2005 12:09 pm
Hey there, im at 6th Form currently studying for my A's and am applying to university after December. Im wanting to study Human Biosciance or Biological sciences. But i beleve that I need a break, too much studying hurts my brain Crying or Very sad and i was thinking about takeing a year out. But then i thought too myself what if i dont want to come back or if i loose intrest or motivation in my chosen subject, and after all I have bout 3-4 months of holiday before i do go to University. So i have asked a few freinds who are already at uni and they said that some people on the course have had a gap, and because of it are not performing well. So i have taken this into consideration and thouht maby if i go to Oz in the break before starting uni it would be enough. Also that it would maby be better to go for a gap after finnishing uni because I would have the degree out of the way and have less pressure and worry about comeing back, just want your thoughts and advice on this one Very Happy.

Also if i do go on a gap or a break I would go to visit family in Perth, i havent spoken to them yet but im sure that they will oblige, as they have been over here several times.

One last question what kind of job oppertunitys are there in Australia for a person with one year industrial training and a degree in either Human Bioscience or Biological sciences, and is the salery enough to live off? (Cant stand UK any longer Crying or Very sad too cold, wet, smelly and Tony Blair is an arse)

Anyway thanks for your time!!!! Very Happy im sure uve had loads of threads like this

Perth sounds a good place for someone wanting to escape the UK winter, DDT, especially if you can stay for free with relatives. As for Tony Blair avoidance, don't forget: we have John Howard! Laughing
The best of luck in making a good decision.

Not living in Perth myself, I honestly don't know which agencies would best need your needs, but here's what I found when I searched:

West Australian

click on the left panel for employment. But remember there are other sites - monster.com.au or jobseek.com.au come to mind

Don't meander - be specific and know what you want to do. If you want to spend a year here in your gap year then try the Aust Govt site because it will point you towards season jobs. If you want to migrate permanently and want a long term career then (a) get qualified first and (b) understand the process of applying to migrate to Australia.

Thanks for the help uve been ace. Ya i want to get my qualifications first before seriously start thinking about emigrating, I want to go for a gap to see if id like it or not Razz. So if i do id consider it, just comeing out of uni would be the best time i beleave due to the fact i have less pressures on me, u know what i mean like family, job so and so forth.

It all depends on the type of job & your qualifications & expertise. Demand & supply rule here as it does elsewhere.

It's not stupid. msolga is right - but the answer is a bit more complex. In Australia we have regional economies. That means simply that some places are more expensive to live in than others. I know you'd be familiar with that concept because it's more expensive to live in London than it is in a regional city such as - pick a name - Torquay.

But here it's a little different in that the work you choose to do might have its wages/salary (and other conditions) regulated either by a state Award or Agreement or a Federal Award or Agreement or even an individual contract. Have I confused you yet? Very Happy

Let's put it this way. If you're working in Perth in a certain occupation you probably won't be earning as much as someone in Sydney who is carrying out the same occupation. But in Sydney you need the money as the cost of living is higher (so I'm told, I've only ever visited Sydney not lived there). But earning a little less in Perth isn't a problem because the cost of living is less. Does that make sense?

You indicated that you might work in the sciences. Try this site Apesma it's the union for eggheads (just kidding, it's a really good organisation, I did a training course with some of their management a few years ago, I was impressed with them). You can find out what the salaries are like but the catch is you have to be a member first.

The newspapers are good sources for salary information. You also have to realise that starting salary will be lower than that for someone who is experienced and has plenty of service in an occupation or with an employer. Dig around on a few Australian websites and note the costs of things such as housing (buying or renting), cars, whitegoods etc. It's really all relative.

Thanks goodfielder youve been excelent help, ya i do understand the concept of earning higher wages in places like Sydney(you gave a good analogy useing London), plus the earning less just comeing out of studys. Razz

But i have one last question for ya, here it comes:

Do you think it is better for me, after i finnish university, to either get a job here in England save a bit of money+ get a few extra points on the emmigration form, and have the risk of settleing down.

Or is it better for me to come fresh out if uni and go for a gap year to Oz check out for the last time if i like it and start the emmigration process whith risk of being rejected, but without the worry of settleing down. Very Happy

If ur wondering why im asking this, it is because it happend to my mum:P she was given the oppertunity to go to Australia to work on her uncles chickin farm (probably adminastritive work) but told her to get experiance, so she did, she got a job and............... well never went in the end cos she met dad and had me.

Sorry for the life story its just that i dont want that to hapen to me:'(

A gentle tip - do not admit to ever drinking Fosters when you get here. If necessary say "yes I may have tried it once in the UK, I believe I was drugged and tied up and someone opened my mouth and made me drink some- well it was either that or choke to death."

I prefer Cascade Premium lager (Hobart, Tasmania) only because I like the label Very Happy Seriously, it is a fine beer. The most popular beer I think here is VB (Victoria Bitter). I don't drink it because it gives me a shocking headache but it is well liked.

DDT - I'm not the person who should be giving anyone advice about their lives - I've made enough bad decisions of my own although I suppose I could always say "don't do what I've done" and that might be good advice.

What you should do is sit down and work it out for yourself. If you hunt around on the net you will find any number of sites that will help you with thinking type tools that you can use to make your own decisions.

Try this site Mindtools for starters.

Just one piece of advice - think any decision through, don't let impulse be your inspiration.

I looked into that but it turns out that you need higher grades than normal to study for a year abroad, which I personal think is unfair. So i decided to doa course with a year of industrial training, kinda better as at the end of it you get a certificate to recognise your achievement, so could help with the migration process and finding a job ( I think employers want people with a bit of training Razz )

Ya I was planin on takin a gap at the end of my studies, so could get a working holiday visa to fund my trips around Australia, but also I have decided to take a few months out before i go away to uni (have massive holidays like 3-4 months Very Happy ) That should b enough time to take a look around Razz.

One more thing do you know how long it takes to climetise?
Also I wount mention drinking Fostors.

Also what bout a phone would it be too expensive to call from Australia with a mobile phone?

One more thing how would I go about askin my aunt if i can come over? She hasent seen me for years I think itwould be more appropreate to send a letter than calling her. What do u guys think??
