The Mass General Hospital in Boston is the 3rd oldest hospital in the USA.
What is the oldest hospital in the USA and what is the 2nd oldest?

FIRST GENERAL HOSPITAL IN THE U.S. ...
The first general hospital in the U.S. was founded in 1751 in Philadelphia by the Quakers. Cook County Hosp. in Chicago has got to be pretty old!

You didn't ask, but the oldest hospital organization in the world is the Hotel Dieu in Paris - founded in the 600's and still in existence!

Google didn't help me in this search. Yes, Cook County in Chicago is very old. But how old? Mercy Hospital in Chicago is also very old.

COOK COUNTY HOSPITAL, CHICAGO
From "Ask Jeeves":

Hospital that inspired 'ER' closing its doors.

The hospital has provided care to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, since 1914.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP/cnn.com) -- Cook County Hospital, the sprawling institution that inspired TV's "ER" and provided first-class care under Third World conditions for much of the last century, is shutting its doors.

At 7 a.m. Thursday, patients will start moving from the old building into a sleek new hospital nearby. While the distance between the two can be measured in yards, the difference is immeasurable. ...

According to Bellevue's web site:

America's oldest public hospital, which opened in 1736, has grown from six beds to over 1,000. The country's first maternity ward, hospital-based ambulance service and emergency pavilion were all located at Bellevue.

The Mass General in Boston is older than any hospital in Chicago.

Interesting comments about Cook County in Chicago. I'm surprised the Dems could come up with the money. Must be that old Daley Charm.

Quote:
Of Aesculapius and the medicine man:
Some comments on the College Seal

by George W. Stephenson, MD, FACS

The official description of the Seal follows:

"Aesculapius, the symbol of European learning, and an American Indian Medicine Man are seated beneath a Tree of Knowledge, making offering of their symbols of healing in common service to mankind.

"Aesculapius is draped in conventional Greek fashion, wears sandals, and holds aloft, toward the Powers above, the rod and serpent, a common emblem of mystery and healing. The Indian Medicine Man is nude to his waist. His buffalo robe, hair side out, bound by a thong, is worn over the lower part of his body. He wears moccasins, has a single white feather in his loose hair, a gourd rattle in one hand, and a skin medicine pouch, decorated with feathers and paint , stands at his side. These are typical of the native resources in America.

"The words 'American College of Surgeons' appear in a circle around the upper portion of the emblem. Below appear the words: 'Founded in 1913,' and 'Omnibus per artem fidemque prodesse' (To serve all with skill and fidelity.)"

Everything here but 2nd
This post seems to cover all but second with Bellvue in NYC for first and Mass General for second in 1811. I think Candler in Savannah, GA which has had several names in the past, but was first established in 1804 is 2nd.
