Women around here have been using these incredibly comfy shoes (godawful looking, I admit) but totally waterproof and easy to walk in:
dagmaraka wrote:oh, and the malaria regions are in and around new delhi - peak is in august. the skeeters in kerala aren't bad, especially during the dry seasons. you'll see lizards and large tsikadas, but i don't think we had any issue with mosquitos. then again, i was there in february and in august. but august being the end of the rain season one would think there would be many. weren't.
Its a pleasure to know that people outside my country have more knowledge about her than me!
Where do those inelegant loafers come from, Piffka?
Oh spdergal, it's normal for everyone else to know more about your country than you do. The best restaurants and most interesting villages in Devon have been introduced to me by outsiders!
Ah well, I am very young and haven't seen much of the world.
Someday, may be a british might thank me for introducing him to the best restaurants of London.
well I hope so spidergal, but I wouldnt bank on it unless you are paying the bill
and how is the Ganges flowing at the moment?
Can I still buy Benares brass?
Ceili, It was good to see you after such a long haiatus of criscrossing paths. While in Delhi, please go to the Taj Palace Hotel for a meal. The service and food are first rate. My physician's sister got married there.
For Clary and McTag, You guys have all my envy then some. My journey to India was in December 2001, but our tour only covered the north. Some day, I'd like to visit Mumbai and the south.
bm for now.
I'd also like to do the Palace on Wheels; a grand way to see India.

They're called "Crocs" and they cost about $35. Available many places... You can Google 'em. I have one pair and am thinking seriously about another pair (of Highlands).
CI -- When Gautam told us about the Palace on Wheels, I knew that someday I'd try very hard to make that trip. <swoon>
Let me look at my calendar; it seems I'm open for 2007.
I looked them up, piffka... they are quite tempting. Ara they plastic (like garden clogs?
Ci... wouldn't that be wonderful. When is the best time to go on that Palace on Wheels, do you remember?
Osso -- They're a plastic foam, I think. You'd be amazed at how little they weigh (so they'd be great for travel). I bought some at the state fair last month because I was too warm in my socks and shoes. I had no problem strolling all around in bare feet... no blisters, just happy feet. They look, however, like duck feet. (Especially in the pale yellow I chose ... what the heck was I thinking???)
I think they're sorta cute, and possibly tolerable in the black, or the chocolate or cocoa or whatever it is, re a gathering of
normal people. I was attracted to the coral...
I have weird feet, they will itch if I look at them crosseyed, a histimine reaction of some sort. I'm pretty careful. Still, I may have to try a pair with the air vents...
Palace on Wheels is not cheap: looking at US$2,800 for seven days p/p for a double excluding transportation to India. One week will get you from Delhi to the Taj Mahal and back to Delhi.
Yes.. I wish I'd had you with me when I was choosing my colors, maybe I wouldn't have bought yellow. There were so many choices.
Yellow, duck feet!!!!
Pardon us, folks..
y'know, these are for men too......
I remember another travel thread becoming a shoe-shopping thread...
Personally, I prefer the ordinary 2nd class travel to the Palace on Wheels type. The scenery is just as great, and you are likely to meet and converse with locals. You are free to wander about, stand in the open door of the carriage as it trundles past tiny farms and wild country, and get out at stations to buy hot freshly cooked snacks and tea (coffee in the south, it used to be).
Clary, I thought you came to India 30 years ago.
Now, you must be quite old, aren't you?
You can see Clary's photo in an A2K london meeting thread, and elsewhere. She is a public figure.
